An interspersing of contemporary Irish poets with the work of contemporary craft makers for an exhibition at the American Irish Historical Society in New York, 2010.

MATERIALpoetry was the first in a series of exhibitions to arise from an initiative to bring together design practices and studio makers and to challenge the concepts, creativity and skills of their practices by focusing on new processes and techniques in the studio and by exposing them to new and alternative approaches to design and making.

The exhibition and this book presents work by sixteen of Ireland's leading studio makers alongside collaborative work between O'Donnell +Tuomey Architects, Design Partners and W/Workshop, and a small anthology of contemporary Irish poems interspersed with these objects.

Introduction by Christopher Cahill, with the essay 'Words and the makers', to accompany poems by Brian Coffey, Simon Cutts, Sean Dunne, Kit Fryatt, Vona Groarke, Michael Hartnett, Seamus Heaney, Trevor Joyce, Billy Mills, Eilean Ni Chuilleanain, Maurice Scully, Eithne Strong, Sheila Wingfield and Augustus Young.

This title, was the first publication to coincide with a three year programme of exhibitions, a collaboration between STUDIOpractice and the American Irish Historical Society and was followed in 2012 by dubh: Dialogues in Black.
